Cheese Cake

if you really want to spend time curling your hair,
or picking out the right pillow for that chair.if you really enjoy making everything matching and clean,
color coordinated and neat – I hope you do those things
if you want to, I hope you do.
but.
you know you don’t have to, right?
you don’t owe it to anyone – it’s your life.
your house doesn’t have to look a certain way.
your body doesn’t have to look a certain way.so you can spend time curling your hair,
or picking out the right pillow for that chair.if you want to, I hope you do.
but.you could paint a picture instead
or stay longer in bed.
you could call a friend with that time if you’d rather
maybe one you haven’t talked to forever
you could curl up in bed with a comfort book to read.
or curl up in bed with a comfort block of cheese.
if you want to, I hope you do.

Roses are red, sometimes
Violets are blue, most times
Grass is green (when healthy and in season)
Cheese is delicious, always.
Yum.

I sit all alone with tummy a grumblin
Tired and hungry to the fridge I am fumblin
I don’t want to cook but need something to eat
I go for the dairy, then stare down at my feet
Remembering the wonderful nectar of cow
It brings me bliss, I reach for it now
A couple hours later my intestines remind me
The lactose intolerance leaves a gas wave behind me
Love it then hate it, the curds and the whey
Maybe I will make better choices next day

Without you, nachos are just chips,
Without you, grilled cheese is just toast,
Without you, queso is an empty bowl,
And that is why I love you most.
Without you, pizza is squished tomato on bread,
Without you, cheesecake is just crumbs,
Without you, salad is even more sad,
Dinner without you is dumb.
I said dinner without you is dumb.
Yes, dinner without you is dumb.
i used to think
we said, “Say cheese”
for pictures because
forming the word
tricks your mouth
into forming a smile
but, I think something different now
now I think
when you stand there
staring down the camera lens
remembering the dumpster fire
that is
the world
and maybe the dumpster fire
that is
your life
and then the voice rings out –
the voice from behind the lens –
the voice rings out,
“say cheese!”
and you remember.
cheese exists.
and sure, your mouth opens
to make the long “e”
and you can’t help but
to show teeth
but the real smile comes
because cheese exists
because you’re a grown up
who can have some
whenever you want

My friend Jelise made this really cool cheese ball for Christmas this year and it was the only Christmas picture she took! I wrote this little poem about her cheese ball and her Christmas and here it is for your poetry reading pleasure.
“I made a cheese ball,” said my friend Jelise
”And shaped it like a Christmas tree.”
Her son said, “That’s a cheese volcano!”
Jelise said, “No – oh that’d be cool though!”
That Christmas, there was whining, some throwing, some fighting
AND there was giving, some loving, some lighting.
”It wasn’t perfect,” said my friend Jelise
But my family was there and so was some cheese.

Thank you Lisa for adding a verse!
When the Swiss melts and the pan sticks
And I scrape it with glee,
I simply remember
The love for my cheese
Then I just eat away
